Dr. Michel’s Thoughts On Pregnancy And Dentistry

TAKING GOOD CARE OF YOUR TEETH IS VITAL when you’re pregnant. Not only is gum disease linked to premature/smaller babies, pregnant women often have oral health issues of their own during these important nine months.

Women often experience more issues with gingivitis and gum problems when they are pregnant because of the radical hormone changes that their body experiences. The reaction of your gums (and the potential for gingivitis) is exaggerated, your gums can be more easily irritated, and inflammation/bleeding can result.

However, don’t forget that although hormones do increase the potential for oral problems, plaque is still the underlying cause of most cases of gingivitis. This means that maintaining careful oral health care can significantly reduce potential problems. Special attention better ensures a healthy mouth during your pregnancy.

So, what is the best way to ensure you AND your baby stay healthy during pregnancy? The first thing is probably EXACTLY what your doctor has told you to do: eat healthy! Consuming foods that are high in sugar can result in plaque and gingivitis for anybody, but the effects are once again exaggerated during pregnancy.

We hope you understand a little better why it’s so important to keep your regularly scheduled dental checkups when you’re pregnant. The most ideal time for these appointments is during your 4th-6th months of pregnancy because this window is an important time in the baby’s development and because it’s better to get your dental appointments out of the way before the stressful last trimester.

Please don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any concerns about your health during any part of your pregnancy. When you call to schedule a check-up let us know that you’re pregnant so we can best assist you. Here at By the Sea Dentistry, you can be comforted to know that your oral health and your baby’s health are in the best hands.
